Against the Grain - Erwin Schulhoff and the Renaissance
The project "Against the Grain - Erwin Schulhoff and the Renaissance" offers two innovative musicians the opportunity to have a mini-residency at The Green Room and explore new, open and inviting concert formats. This intensive, week-long residency will culminate in a concert.
The program will focus on the work of a 20th-century composer: Erwin Schulhoff belongs to the so-called "lost generation" of artist:s of the 1910s-1930s who were ostracized by the Nazis. His work is juxtaposed with transcriptions of vocal music by the Renaissance master Orlando di Lasso - some of which were arranged by the musicians especially for this purpose. Through their extensive background research in the course of intensive rehearsal phases, the two musicians develop the means by which the subcutaneous connections of the musical worlds are made tangible: in addition to the instruments, voice, movement and texts will also be used. After the performance, which will last approximately one hour, a half-hour "Nachklang" without music will give the participants the opportunity to quietly reflect on what they have experienced or to deepen it in conversation with the artists.
The string duo Kröger-Suwelack has set itself the task of creating concert experiences that break down polarities and musically connect the seemingly impossible. In doing so, traditional concert forms are rethought: the often rigid artist:audience boundary is softened by moving spatial concepts, and tonally disparate musical pairings are merged into a continuum through unconventional artistic cross-connections.
