Crash-Course: “Spiccato” for all string players: students, professionals, teachers.

This course is for you if your spiccato is :

  • not controllable

  • not variable in its dynamic range

  • doesn’t work in every tempo

  • sounds too harsh

Here you can quickly and easily learn a physically logical, variable in tempo and dynamics, functioning and controllable spiccato!

Prof. Christoph Mayer received his violin training at the conservatories in Munich and Cologne and with Sergey Fatkulin. An intensive study of historical performance practice led to his participation in most of the renowned German baroque orchestras, among others, the ensemble "Musica Antiqua Köln", with which he also performed chamber music for several years in numerous concerts and many recordings, some of them award-winning.

His high reputation as a chamber musician is evidenced by performances at international music festivals such as the Styriarte Graz, the Schwetzinger Festspiele and Klang & Raum Irsee as well as in major concert halls such as London's Wigmore Hall, the Tonhalle Zurich, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Lincoln Center and "The Frick Collection" New York or the Berlin Philharmonic.

In addition to numerous radio recordings and CD recordings in larger formations, Mayer has participated in many chamber music recordings, including with "Musica Antiqua Köln".

Christoph Mayer is a sought-after lecturer for historical performance practice at courses and seminars. Among others, he taught at the International Handel Academy in Karlsruhe and coached at the Opera in Zurich. Between 2004 and 2016, he traveled to Nizhny Novgorod (formerly Gorky), Russia, as an "ambassador of historical performance practice" in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Moscow, among others. In 2006 he was appointed honorary professor for his master classes and seminars at the State Conservatory "Mikhail Glinka".

After many years in the profession, he took technique lessons with the violin pedagogue Sergey Fatkulin, whose logical, very effective violin technique based on simple physical principles fascinated him and motivated him to become involved in violin didactics as a pedagogue himself.

Christoph Mayer is currently working on the connection between music physiology and instrumental technique. He coaches players with violin or viola who suffer from physical complaints while playing or who would like to improve their skills.

In addition, he gives lectures and short workshops with a focus on "Musician's Health - Personal Responsibility - Prevention", which are aimed at all instrumentalists.

He is a member of the German Society for Music Physiology and Musicians' Medicine, DgfMM. His essay on "Music Health - Staying Healthy through Technique Coaching" was published in DAS ORCHESTER 1/22.
