Ukraine in Song

The women’s youth choral ensemble: "Ukraine".

Many ensembles are able to fill their CVs with meaningful content by listing their achievements and awards. On the other hand, our vocal ensemble - with the perhaps currently pathos-weighted name of "Ukraine" - is a baby that has just been born. On August 21st at 18:00, we will present our third concert in Germany.

The story of the choir’s creation is related to the latest events that shook the whole world, namely the war in Ukraine. Many Ukrainians were forced to flee their homes to escape the war. This is how the choral director Oksana Dondyk found herself in Germany. She is an Honoured Artist of Ukraine, a professional musician, a classical singer and the director of children's and professional choirs. The idea to create a vocal ensemble belongs to Igor Rozov, a conductor and musicologist, who is also from Ukraine but has lived in Germany for more than 20 years. He motivated Oksana to organize a women's chamber choir. By founding the new group here in Germany she pursued the aim of popularizing national Ukrainian music, promoting Ukrainian culture, and showing the world the depth, richness and beauty of its cultural heritage. Another persuasive factor in its creation was the conviction to attract Ukrainian young women with extensive musical education to the ensemble, bringing them together here in Germany into one collective.

Today's performance will be divided into two parts: the first presents Ukrainian vocal music performed by the young members of the vocal ensemble. This part consists of Ukrainian romances, arias and arrangements of folk songs. A solo flute performance by Aleksandra Siniakova will complement their singing. The concertmaster of the project is a winner of international competitions, Yulia Sokolova.

The second part of the concert is built around performances by the Women's Vocal Ensemble “Ukraine”. This part will feature contemporary sacred music by Ukrainian composers, as well as a block of Ukrainian folk songs with elements of theatrical performance.
